Operating Practices

  • I enjoy the science of the hobby, which is what attracted me to Ham Radio in the first place. I enjoy AM, SSB and most digital modes. I am working on CW currently and hope to get it usable in my lifetime. I spend most of my operating evenings hanging out on 3.630 LSB, enjoying transmitting and listening to ESSB signals.

HF Shack Equipment

  • Transceiver: Flex Radio Flex-3000 with FlexControl
  • Computer: Digital Storm Intel i7 920 and Lenovo T520 i5 laptop
  • Software: VSP Manager, DDUtil, VAC, Mini-Deluxe & DM780, BobMeter, PowerSDR Beta 2.2
  • Contesting Software: N1MM, FLDigi
  • Main Antenna: Butternut HF9V-X ground mounted on 64 radials 40 feet long
  • Other Antennas: Homebrew ladder line G5RV, 80/40/20/10 Fan Dipole
  • Microphone: Audio-Technica AT4040 Side Address Condenser
  • Voice Processor: Symetrix 528E processor.
  • Amplifier: Ameritron AL-80B
  • Dummy Load – Palstar DL2K
  • Tuner: MFJ986 differential roller inductor tuner
  • Telepost LP-100A Digital Vector Wattmeter
  • SplatterView used with Tektronix 2230 oscilloscope for amplifier linearity monitoring
  • Other Equip: W2IHY iBox for PTT/audio interface to Flex-3000, Heil Foot Switch, Balun Designs common mode current chokes 1115ud & 1115u.
  • Power: Furman PS Pro Power Sequencer/Conditioner, Astron RS-35A Power Supply
  • CW Key – N3ZN ZN-9 Iambic Key

Station Monitoring Equipment

  • Clean RF “Splatter View” – This is a demodulator/RF sampler combination pre and post amplifier.  (www.cleanrf.com)  These devices are connected to my oscilloscope and used to monitor my output continually.  This to insure that I am not clipping the amplifier and transmitting a linear output.  This keeps me from splattering and wider than I intend to transmit on the bands.  Splattering is all too common from many operators these days.  A photo of it in operation can be seen in my main photo.
  • Oscilloscope: Tektronix 2230 100 MHz with Digital Storage
  • B & K 1803 Frequency Counter
  • Daiwa CN-801 SWR Meter

VHF Operation

  • Like most hams, I also own several 2M/440 rigs, HT’s, scanners and 2M amplifiers and a sundry of 2M/440 antennas. While I have a 2 commercial 2M base antennas, I use a hombrew copper J-pole as my base 2M/440 antenna.

Amateur Radio Activity

  • First Licensed in 2004, Upgraded to Extra in 2009.
  • Club - An active member of the Dayton Amateur Radio Association, the sponsoring club of the Dayton Hamvention.  I currently serve as a DARA board member as trustee.
  • Hamvention - I am an active member of the Hamvention team and a Committee Chairman. This keeps me VERY busy indeed and cuts into actual amateur operating time. But it is my service to the Ham radio community which I feel is very important.
  • Beta tester for Flex Radio
  • I am an owner and Moderator for several Ham Radio related Yahoo Groups.
  • I am a VE for amateur testing, when time allows.
  • I assist with various cycling and running events for ham radio support, when time allows.
  • I look forward to field day more than any other event of the year. I coordinated a field day in 2010.

Personal

  • Christian – Reformed Theology. Member of Clearcreek Chapel in Springboro, Oh. www.clearcreekchapel.org
  • Serve as Head Audio Engineer at Clearcreek Chapel.
  • Married to a wonderful Christian wife who home schools our young boys.
  • I have 2 young boys and have 2 grown daughters and 1 grown son who are on their own now. I have one grandson and one granddaughter.
  • I have worked in the hydraulics industry in sales/engineering for over 25 years.
  • Born in 1961 and now reside in Dayton, Ohio.
  • As a family, we enjoy skiing in the winter and bicycling in the summer.
  • I enjoy Tae Kwon Do with my young sons.

73,

Scott Myers AC8DE
