I played around on the fringes of Ham Radio for many years, starting in 1957 while still in High School. Acutally built a 5 watt transmitter. Almost had the code licked for a novice license and figured I could pass the written test, just didn't do it. Was in ground radio repair while in the Air Force and did a bit of radio operterating. Was around a couple hams. After the service went into industry, went to school and finally ended my career as Electronic Engineer. Seemed like there was always a ham or three around. Sometime in 2007 I mentioned to my lovely wife, Anne, that I might enjoy ham radio. With encouragement I passed the Technican test in early 2008. Within a few week Anne, said she would like to get her license. I agreed and to meet the challenge said I would go with her when she took the test and take the General test. Both of us passed. I was then pushed to move on to the Extra. I managed that too. Anne is getting close to taking the General. Since getting licensed I've enjoyed 2m/440 locally and while traveling. I made my HF station portable so I can operate from anyplace. Both of us are now retired and enjoy traveling the western part of the country in our small trailer. It's alway great fun to tell somebody on the air that I'm not in Salem, but someplace like Big Bend National Park, TX. Most of HF stuff is 20 meters, sometimes when I'm home 10 meters works pretty for me. Station FT-857D Transceiver Traveling HF antennas 20 meter endFDZ wire, 40 meter endFDZ, and a Buddie Pole. Home HF antennas 6 Band Hex Beam at about 30' VHF/UHF GP-3, currentlly at gournd level but will be at about 30' soon VHF/UHF radios FT-7800, FT-8800, plus about 3 hand helds. Both Anne and I are members of the Salem Amateur Radio Club. We've enjoyed a couple field days and a campout with club menters. Last modified: 2011-11-11 20:50:00, 2206 bytes fetched
