This was followed by a repelled attack by German naval infantry. Another two assaults that day were repelled as well. Over the coming days, the Germans repeatedly bombarded Westerplatte with naval and heavy field artillery along with dive-bombing raids by Junkers Ju 87 Stukas. Repeated attacks of 3500 German soldiers were repelled by the 180 Polish soldiers for seven days. On September 7th Major Henryk Sucharski decided to surrender due to lack of ammunition and supplies and realization no help was going to come from the Polish Army. As a sign of honor for the soldiers of Westerplatte, German commander, Gen. Eberhardt, allowed Mjr. Sucharski to keep his officer's sword while being taken prisoner.
Rules of the ham radio award action „No More War” On 1st September 1939 at 4.45, the German armoured cruiser Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Polish military outpost on Westerplatte in Gdańsk. Although German bombers had launched a bomb attack on the city Wieluń 10 minutes earlier, that event is generally considered to be the beginning of the Second World War. Without having declared war, Germany attacked Poland from the West, the North and the South. In order to honour that heroic defensive war and to reminisce about the main places of fight, the rules of this award have been established – with the motto „NO MORE WAR”.
1. The award action „No More War” is being organised for honouring the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe and for paying homage to the heroic Defensive War 1939, and it will last from 1st September until 6th October 2009. 2. On that occasion, 24 special event stations will be active: 21 stations with suffixes containing one letter and 3 stations with suffixes NMW. 3. The special event stations will be active on various HF and VHF bands (on various modes). 4. Polish stations claiming for the award „No More War” should make contacts with special event stations. With the suffixes of their callsigns - containing one letter, one should compose the slogan „No More War”. In case when one letter for composing the slogan is missing - a contact with any station with the suffix NMW will be valid instead, in conformity with the rules of the award. 5. Foreign stations claiming for the award „No More War” should make contacts with special event stations. With the suffixes of their callsigns - containing one letter, one should compose the slogan „No More War” or make contacts with 3 special event stations with the suffix NMW. In case when some letters for composing the slogan are missing - contacts with stations with the suffix NMW will be valid instead, in conformity with the rules of the award. 6. After having made contacts with all 24 stations, one will be awarded the sticker „excellent”. In order to be awarded that sticker, one should submit an extract from the logbook. 7. Short wave listeners claiming for the award „No More War” should listen to contacts of stations active during the action. The rules of the award „No More War” are identical with the rules concerning ham radio senders. 8. Claims with the exact surface mail address of the claimer should be sent via e-mail or by post to the mail address of the organiser. 9. The award is free of charge. 10. The action is financially supported by the Ministry of National Defence. 11. Any kind of assistance at the action is welcome.
