President Feb 2011 message- de Paul, N0AH Greetings Everyone-
Wow, what an amazing couple of months working DX. From ZL8X to VP8ORK, and now S9DX. I know a lot of us have been very successful in making QSO's with these fine operations thanks to the support of the world wide DX community including our MHDXA donations. Thanks to all the MHDXA members who have provided support to these groups.
Sometimes for me, it is easy to forget the main goal of our club is to support DX'peditions from around the world with all of the club activities we have had this year. As a member of the MHDXA back in 1998, my solo trip to VK9L was in part not just supported by funds from the MHDXA, but also from support and advice of many of our members who have been on DX'peditions. And as a club, we have a significant amount of members who have been on some really amazing DX'peditions over the years!
All of this DX activity has really helped activate the Reflector. It has been great to see the MHDXA Reflector getting so much use these days for club votes, posting spots, and sharing news. And while the qrz.com page at K0AB has helped in keeping the club updated with feedback from various club functions, our goal of establishing a web-site is still the main focus for your board right now.
The winter weather and contest season has slowed us down a bit on getting this decision about our future website plans finalized. And of course, we want the majority of members to decide on our final direction with a club vote. But it won't please everyone. There is so much that goes into this decision such as privacy, ease and/or cost of maintenance, formats, interactive use, and considerations for future upgrades.
At our next meeting, (TBA) which K0MF has been working on in securing a venue up north as we have promised to have a meeting in this area for several reasons, we hope to present all the facts to help the members in attendance and also notified by the reflector, to make an informed decision. We would like to have an open conversation to try and bring a consensus rather than remain polarized on the issue. Reality of costs and ease of running the page are going to make the decision easier and yet changes in how traditional pages are thought about in so many ways can really complicate things.
Moving onto our sponsorship of the Acres Green Elementary School, the kids are doing wonderful. The 5th and 6th graders have had meetings most Tuesdays after school during school days and I would ask you to please visit their home page at www.qrz.com under KD0NIV as it is very descriptive of what they have accomplished and plan to do for the rest of the year. We are about to put in for our first ARRL equipment grant andexpect a positive decision on this after May 1, 2011. Right now, we are seeking a speaker to discuss a business associated with wireless technology, and I know the kids would really enjoy learning about what they have been studying applies to the real world for future careers. Please email me if you can stop by for about 45 minutes on a future Tuesday in April or May.
We also haveother news with our youth membership. Anna, W0ANT, has been invited this July by the YDXA to attend the YOUTH DX'ADVENTURE at TI5N with 5 other young operators from around the country to learn more skills oncontesting, DX'ing, andthe latest in associated technology. Details can be found atwww.qsl.net/n6jrl. I received a DVD on last year's trip and plan to bring it to the next MHDXA meeting. Don, N6JRL, has significant backing from the ARRL Foundation, and several major DX Associationsdown to grass root efforts to raise monies.Last year, they were able to cover 100% of the travel, food, and lodging expenses for all who went. We plan to vote on a small donation to this group and in return, we will be getting our club logo recognized with some of the biggest clubs around.
If you know of an active youth operator who loves chasing countries, has some HF operating experience, computer logging skills, call sign recognition ability, and loves being on the other end of a pile up, please contact Don, N6JRL, who I believe is still accepting applications. Please check his home page for qualifications and if you would like to make your own personal donation. Each youth team member is allowed to bring one parent for the obvious reasons of chaparon but also, to help the team. Already, we have had other Colorado clubs make donations so the local support for this is building. Please visit to their website is very FB to learn more-
Dayton is just around the corner.I know we have several going this yearto help volunteer for various clubs and functions and look forward to running into a lot of friends from the MHDXA. It is always amazing to see MHDXA members manning the booths of various clubs and events and I hope we can see some of you at Contest University this year. If you have not gone to CTU, there is still time to register. Check out www.contesting.com for details from K3LR. While the emphasis is on contesting, there are several forums you can attend to sharpen your DX skills. It is held in Dayton on the Thursday before theHam'vention.
Of note, please don't forget to pay 2011 dues. You can send them into Mike, K0MF, at his home listed at his qrz.com address. Also, there is the Aurora Repeater Hamfest this next Sunday, Feb 13th, 9am-1pm, located at the Adams County Fair Grounds in Brighton. If you need a table, pleae contact wayne, N0POH, at 303-699-6335. VE testing at 10 am, and the talk in is 147.150/R (+) BTW, Wayne and his XYL Joan, gave a great presentation to the Rabbit Ears Club last month on VHF meteor scatter. It was awesome!!
