Greetings from Kansas!
Leavenworth sits on the west bank of the Missouri River, approximately twenty miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri. Leavenworth was the first U.S. settlement in the Kansas territory, although its founder was not supposed be on the west side of the river at all. In 1827, Colonel Henry Leavenworth left Jefferson Barracks, Missouri with orders to build a fort on the east bank of the Missouri River, situated near the mouth of the Little Platte River. Colonel Leavenworth did not find a suitable place, and so he crossed over to the west bank. Locating high ground near the site of an old French trading fort, Leavenworth directed his men to build a camp. Thus, Fort Leavenworth, and the associated town, came to be because someone did not follow instructions. Leavenworth now serves as home to lots of people who don’t follow the rules. The photo is the morning after an all-night observing session at the Great Plains Star Party of 2000. Amateur astronomy is one of my other hobbies. My primary telescope is a Starmaster 18" FX f/3.7 model Dobsonian reflector. http://www.starmastertelescopes.com/shows pictures of what my scope looks like. Check out the Astronomical Society of Kansas City http://www.askconline.org/index.htm for more information about astronomy in the Midwest, featuring Powell Observatory and the 30" Ruisinger reflector. Most notable ham radio accomplishment is being KC0PTL's dad. Operating interests include DX; QRP, especially CW; and portable operations. Thanks for stopping by. Good dx! 72 es 73, Mike, NØTU
