Dear Fellow Ham Operator,
My handle is Ray. I was first licensed as a Novice operator in 1966 with the call WN0SJK, I was 14 years old at that time. My original rig consisted of a Heathkit DX-60 transmitter ( xtal controlled ) and a KnightKit shortwave receiver ( with a BFO 4 CW ) Before my novice year was up, I upgraded to a general class.
During the summer before my senior year in high school, I got my extra class. I assembled a Heathkit HW-100 so I could get on SSB. I did a little bit of everything, including mobiling. I loved being a part of the Prarie Dog ARC at Yankton, S.Dakota. I especially enjoyed field days. I went to college at S.Dak. State U. in Brookings, S.Dakota. My HW-100 along with a Heath DX-100 which I converted into a linear amplifier ( using 2 811s ) was the college club's equipment, I was the club's trustee. I graduated from SDSU with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering and went to work for Collins Radio
( Rockwell International ) in Cedar Rapids, Ia. I was stuck on 2 meters while living in an apartment there with my wife Vonnie. While there, I acquired my 1x2 call. , I also designed and built a frequency synthesizer for my Regency 2M FM rig. I had a lot of help from my friend Dwight ( WB0PIP )with this project. In 1978 I was transferred to the Collins facility in Richardson Texas. There we bought a house and I erected a 60 foot tower with a tribander yagi. I’ll never forget the look on Vonnies face as she looked up at me at the top of that tower. I operated there using a Ten Tech Argonaut with a 50 watt linear.
I was off the air for several years until while living back in S.Dak. around 1993, I acquired a Yeasu FT-101. I strung up a G5RV multiband antenna and had a lot of fun hamming there, especially on 75 meters. I bounced back to Texas ( Plano ) at Christmas time of 1996 and QSO’d there until I moved to Mineola in 2002. I’m still using the FT101 and the G5RV while hoping to a acquire a newer rig soon ! I live in Mineola with my wife Cheri and our son Mark who has a twin sister Katherine. She has blessed us with two grandchildren, Chase 3, and Maddy 3 months. Chase loves to introduce himself over the radio. That’s all for now, 73s Ray J. K0WW
