I was a Radioman 2nd Class (E-5) aboard a Fletcher Class destroyer, USS Tingey, DD539. I qualified to operate on a high speed cw circuit (net) at 35+ wpm. I used a Vibroplex Super Bug that I bought at Henry Radio in Los Angeles in 1956. I also operated HF & UHF gear as well as being a Teletype repairman. Kleinschmidts finally replaced by Teletype Model 28's. Good old five level Baudot code. I'm a member of ARRL and several local clubs here in the Orange, CT area. I'm a leader of the local CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), an ARES EC, and a Skywarn spotter. I enjoy doing public service now that I'm retired and have the time to pay back the community. Also like to operate on Field Day with the Orange Amateur Radio Association (OARA). I spent my career as an electronics/computer technical writer/editor. I also ran a business doing audio repairs for Lafayette Radio Electronics. I repaired gear for three stores in the New Haven, CT area. Currently running an ICOM 706MKIIG with an OPEK multi-band antenna in the mobile for HF, and a Jetstream JTM3B antenna for VHF/UHF. In the shack is an ICOM 7000 up to a Diamond X300 for VHF/UHF and for the HF bands an 80 meter dipole, center fed with 450 ohm ladder line, using an MFJ-948 Deluxe Versa Tuner II antenna tuner. Hand-helds are a Yaesu FT-60R dual band, a Quansheng dual band, a Wouxon dual band, and a 2 meter ICOM V8. The Quansheng and Wouxon are for ARES, CERT, and emergency use. Thanks for checking out my QRZ page. 73 Al fb es om de k1qex k P.S. Although I was an electronics technical writer for my career, I have no connection with the QEX magazine.
