Originally licensed as KN7ZSA in 1963 along with my long time friend Brian, KN7ZRZ (the call signs are consecutive). The two of us spent long hours pounding the brass as we grew up on San Juan Island in Puget Sound, Washington State. We still keep in touch via HamRadio to this day. While serving in the US Army Signal Corps. I operated MARS stations K2USA at Fort Monmouth, NJ and KZ5AA at Fort Clayton, in the former Panama Canal Zone, and I was issued the Canal Zone call KZ5VA. The actual station location is Alger, Washington, 35 miles south of the Canadian border along Interstate-5 in the Pacific Northwest, grid square CN-88uo. The station equipment is installed in what once was a coat closet and has overflowed into a second position for rig testing and maintenance. I use two Ameritron 5-position coax switches, back to back which allows me to easily cross-connect rigs to loads without moving coax jumper cables. I use an MFJ antenna analyzer/SWR meter that I can instantly switch in for pre-tuning. Tuning up on an active Ham band is a pet peeve of mine. The HF rig is a Yaesu Mark-V FT-1000mp, Palstar AT2K antenna tuner and a Dentron MLA-2500 amplifier when needed. Other radios are for ten meters up to 70cm employing various modes. Received audio is mixed via a Soundcraft audio mixer board where it is then fed to a USB Signalink for data modes and to a Kenwood stereo monitor amp and a pair of JBL bookshelf speakers to enhance the sound quality of received signals. The station is surrounded by trees so wire antennas rule. The main wire HF antennas are a 258 ft. inverted- L at 95 feet, a standard G5RV dipole, a 204ft G5RV Double up 65ft and a multi-band MA5B yagi at 40 feet . An assortment of Yagis and verticals take care of six meters to 70cm. Like many Hams I'm always seeking the better antenna. I enjoy participating in local nets on 75 and 40 meters and I enjoy a good QSO on PSK, RTTY or SSTV.
If you value your freedom; thank a veteran.
As of August 2011 , I have a ten meter beacon on 28.2378. I welcome any signal reports via email. Beacon info: Transmitter= RCI 2950 Mirage running five watts to a Ringo Vertical at 38ft. On the air 24/7 except during periods of ten meter operating or system maintenance.
