WELCOME TO W5DPT AMATEUR RADIO
I was first licensed as KA5FBT on July 17, 1979. I learned my Morse Code skills under the FIST of Martin “MICK” Lang WB5RSS/SK, at the Houston Amateur Radio Club. MICK had the ability to teach one how to love CW. When I passed my Advanced exam I was issued the call KD5GM. After many years of operating as KD5GM I decided that I would get a Vanity call depicting my present QTH, thus "Whiskey 5 Deer Park Texas".
My main interest in Amateur radio for over 30 years has been traffic handling. I spent many hours, on several ARRL Section nets in North and South TEXAS, each week throughout the 80’s and early 90’s.
I had the honored privilege to work very close with Arley and Pat Garvin WB5NKC and WB5NKD. Arley and Pat mentored me early on in traffic handling, mostly in the CW nets especially TSN, OTN and ARTS on the 30, 40 and 80Meter bands. I always enjoyed my chats with Carl, AA5JW after the TSN sessions during the week. Thanks Carl. During this period of time I had the honored privilege to serve as NET Manager for the NTS TEXAS SLOW NET for nearly ten years. In my quest to pursue my love for CW, I have again removed the mic from my FT 897 and plugged in my vibroplex paddles along with an 989D tuner feeding the old Doublet with ladder line (tnx LES, WQ5D) and I am back to brass pounding on the HF bands again after a 6 year absence from the melodious tones of CW. When I am mobile you will catch me on 28.060 plus or minus 10 KHz
I have been a long time member of the ARRL and I am proud to be a LIFE member of the Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club where, in years past, I served in several official capacities in the club with mentoring and support from Mr. “Bud” Clifton King, K5CEK. My love for CW enticed me to want to teach Morse Code classes for B-VARC. I owe thanks to Doug Holley, KE5SR for his encouragement to get involved with the code classes that he had previously taught at that time.
As the years have passed I have become interested in the VHF and UHF bands. I enjoy 2 meter SSB and CW. I thankfully blame Rick Arnett, WA5SIX for my interest in SIX meter SSB work and as you might have guessed, 80% of my 6 Meter Q's are with CW! What a thrill this band is!
MY intention in writing this profile was not to tell so much about myself but to share with you the closest of many friends who have helped me to enjoy the hobby of Amateur Radio. Thank you for your contact on Amateur Radio.
CW, the original Digital Mode!
