Location of EchoLink Gateway M0KFW-L 430.050MHz 94.8Hz Tone CLOSED DECEMBER 2010 M0KFW-L EchoLink Gateway served the City of Exeter from 2001 until its closure in December 2010. The Gateway was one of the first Internet RF gateways in the South West of England. Originally installed near Exeter Barracks, the Gateway was relocated in 2004 to the higher ground of Redhills for improved coverage. However, despite the profusion of local Internet Linking Gateways and Repeaters, in recent years there has been a noticeable decline in VHF and UHF Amateur Radio activity in the area, especially mobile. After 12 months of declining and sporadic local use, coupled with a significant increase in Hams preferring to use their computers and iPhones on the EchoLink system instead of RF, our small User Group feels that the RF Gateway service is no longer needed in Exeter. A situation of "Use it or Lose it". RF users can continue to make EchoLink contact via MB7IEX in Exmouth (connected to *IRELAND* Server), which is within range of much of Exeter. Users of Gateways and Repeaters are reminded that such services are voluntary and provided at a financial cost to Sysops and User Groups. A modest annual donation towards electricity/site fees shows appreciation and generally ensures continuation of the service.
