Was first licensed in 1958, as KN0RGJ and used a Viking Adventurer along side a Hallicrafters SX-99. . My Elmers were Jim, K0EVE and his dad, Russ, K0JFK (or as he would say John Fitzgerald Kennedy). When our family would visit relatives in Eagle Grove, IA, Jim and and his friends often included me in their activities. An invite to the inner world of Jim and Russ' shack was a life changing experience. Their Hammurland HQ-140X Receiver and Johnson Viking II Transmitter were the most amazing things I had ever seen. I came home to Iowa City inspired, and with a straight key they had given me. I never forgot the magic of what they had shown me. However a "D" in Latin my Freshman year in High School brought an end to my Ham activities for the time being. Did serve as Radio Team Chief, 716-10 in Army Reserves ('62-'65) running Net Control and teaching radio procedures in a Head Quarters Unit. RG68s, Jeep mounted. Was fun but was working my way through The University of Iowa and had no money or spare time for Amateur Radio in those days. Later went through relicensing and upgrades while chasing DX on SSB QRO with a Icom 751A and an SB220 amp into a TET 43SP at 52 ft. 252 confirmed DX, 252 confirmed Pete Hoover, W6ZH (SK) was my first real inspiration to give QRP a go. Had the honor of meeting him as he gave a talk to our club, here in IC. Now enjoying CW/QRP with a wonderful Elecraft K2 into a 5 band Hex up 30 Ft. and a K1 into a Par EF 10-40. CW is a challenge for me but it seems to be getting along and has brought back the fun to making each contact. SKCC has and is helping tremendously and is a hoot to boot. Nice people and more and more all the time. My best to you and yours, 72, John SKCC 2964T 40 Meter Endorsement SKCC WAS No 163 Last modified: 2011-07-15 23:33:31, 1968 bytes fetched
