********************** I use LoTW and e-QSL. My logs are uploaded daily******************************
I was first licensed as WN3NDK in 1969 when I was 15 years old, still in high school, and living in Waynesboro, PA. My first TX was home brew, with transformer-less power supply, using a 50C5 oscillator tube, built on a scrap piece of masonite, and running 10 watts. Appropriately, it was named the "Bare Essentials" transmitter. My RX was a vintage Harvey Wells R9-A. After a few months of working the Novice bands with just three crystals, I upgraded to General with the call WA3NDK. Shortly thereafter, I built and operated a Heathkit DX-60B w/VFO. I operated 40 and 15 meter CW, and some AM on the 10 meter band.
After graduating from high school, I attended The Pennsylvania State University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1976. Upon graduation from college,I started my career in the the U.S. Army engineer intern program and was assigned to Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, PA. At Letterkenny Army Depot, I was responsible for the test and evaluation of fire-control systems and major radar components of the Improved HAWK missile system. In 1982, I moved to Virginia and joined the U.S. Army’s Signal Warfare Laboratory (USASWL), at Vint Hill Farms Station, (VHFS) Warrenton, VA. There, I was assigned as Project Leader for directing the engineering, design, development, acquisition, and production of communications systems. Living in Virginia, I changed my call to N4HUS (Ham Using Skywave) and continued using the DX-60B and R9-A until 1987 whenI purchased my first solid state XCVR, a Ten-Tec Argosy II. I still continued CW operations on the 40 and 15 meter bands. In 1998, I was assigned to the U.S. Army Intelligence Center at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. There, I continued my career as a Communications Engineer, and living in Sierra Vista, AZ. Below , is one of the Comms systems. I continued to use the Argosy II until I replaced the old workhorse with a new Jupiter 538 CE in early-August 2010. Radio operations take place on the sewing machine table located on the rear porch of my high desert (4000 feet ASL) QTH. I enjoy CW on 40 and 20 meter bands using either my Wm. M. Nye Co. Speed-X or JH Bunnell straight key or Vibroplex No. 6 Lightning Bug. My SKCC Number is 5600T. Recently, I obtained WAS CW Mixed Band.
