I was first licensed in May of 1993 in Utah, after 20 some years as a SWL. I still love to listen to shortwave, there is still the magic and awe of receiving a radio signal from halfway around the world on a wire! Well, this lead to ham radio, no surprise there, but I was a late comer at age 41. Passed my General written a few years later, but couldn't get past the code test at that time. By late 1998, I was losing interest and had moved to southern Arizona, where lots of outdoor activities kept me busy.

Well then, when the FCC dropped the code requirement, I retested all the way to Extra. I'm active on HF now, I operate mostly QRP with my ICOM 703+, and Elecraft KX1, KX3, K1 and K2. I like to operate QRP portable, my favorite, which I combine with my hiking/backpacking and canoe trips around Arizona and the west. I built kits as a kid in the early and mid 60's (CB radios, etc.), from old Allied Radio Knight Kits. I've done some small simple kits in the last few years now.

I'm still fascinated by CW, I did learn it as a Boy Scout, but that didn't seem to help years later. I'm working on the CW from the computer now, it's coming along. I've been getting on the air with the CW, but have a long way to go yet. I also operate PSK-31, with the very portable and light NUE-PSK Digital Modem. And I've discovered the world of LEO satellites, using my FT-60 and Arrow II yagi.

I plan to keep it simple and mostly QRP, I love the challenge of low power ops. To date, I have 50 states and 34 countries logged. The longest contact is an ocean going Tug , off the coast of Angola (west coast of Africa), on PSK31 @ 5watts (8330 miles), and New Zealand on SSB @ 5 watts(6760miles).

I work as Quality Control Inspector for a Major Repair Organization (MRO) here in southern Arizona. My company perfoms all related maintenance and modifications on large commercial aircraft from the Boeing 747 on down to commuter aicraft. I'm a licensed Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) mechanic with experience on J3 Cubs to the B-747 aircraft, also spent 3 years with Rockwell on the B1-B Bomber program. I've been a licensed Private Pilot, single engine-land, since 1975.
