The amateur career of N9IJ began in 1965 when W4OTI started teaching me code
(to divert my interest in his daughter, I suspect). In August 1966, WN4DWN was
issued and the trek began.
A progression of calls, WN4DWN, WB4IJH, WB9LQC, KE9YR, and N9IJ mapped upgrades
(never had a Tech) and moves as I left N.C. for Navy duty and wound up in
Illinois.
The 1967 Novice Roundup introduced me to contesting, CW contesting still my
first love, but many an hour was spent in the National Traffic System nets
honing CW skills. Maintain memberships in QRP-ARCI, QCWA, among others. Enjoy
160M-UHF all-mode operation from home as well as vehicle, bicycle, and
pedestrian mobile. Long active in APRS, dabble in satellite operations, and
operate a UHF repeater.
Currently, N9IJ is located in Lake County, Illinois, 50 miles north of Chicago.
Other interests include R/C aircraft and photography. N9IJ is a retired police
officer, now working for the County of Lake Radio Department.
