First licensed as WN6SWB (novice) in 1966. Elmer was Warren Sichel, W6EJY. Became a member of the Terra Linda High School Amatuer Radio Club (WB6KFU) in San Rafael, Ca. One year later upgraded to General and was issued WB6SWB. Operated HF with a Viking Valiant that could turn every TV within 2 1/2 blocks into a little white dot on CW, AM, & RTTY! Also VHF thru the Marin Radio Club's repeater K6GWE with a Heath Twoer!
In 1969 ham radio took a backseat to the Navy, then to marriage, then to college, then to theatre, then to computers, then to starting my own business, then to , then to, etc. Somewhere in the military days, the license expired.
The 'then to's.' ended in 1989 when the YL and I decided to chuck the house and move aboard our boat. I needed a hobby that would fit on a boat, so it was back to ham radio. Passed Novice and Technician the same day in December of '89 and received the call N6XNB. General in March of '90, Advanced in July of '90 and Extra in August of '90 with the call AA6XM.
By September of 2001 the boat was getting a little small and a little cold and damp (funny how those things don't matter when you're young!) Moved to beautiful central Oregon in October of '01. Being a believer in the 'old fashioned' callsign should = region, applied for and received the most CW friendly region 7 call available at the time.
Currently operating QRP 160 thru 10 with an Elecraft K2, Wilderness Sierra, and a Small Wonder Labs WM-20 and 2 meters with Ten-Tec 1220. Accessories are an Emtech ZM-2 ATU, LDG Z-11 ATU, and an Oak Hills WM-2 watt meter. Goal is to have nothing in my shack that I haven't built either from scratch or a kit.
