Hi! Thanks for stopping by my QRZ.com profile. I started out in ham radio in the spring of 1992; something just came over me and I got my very own Novice ticket (with code of course!). Since then I've upgraded all the way to Extra in the USA and Class A in the UK. I'm quite active in my local ARES/RACES group (one in the same here) which, as it probably is in your area, is filled with all sorts of interesting people. As further service to the community I run a Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance Monitor for the Stanford Solar Center's Space Weather Monitoring Program, an APRS enabled Weather Station, and a Radiation Monitor. I'm not a "hams ham" home-brewer but am no stranger to solder smoke. Most of my pleasure derives from using the technology to help others. To learn more about me and my interests, keep on reading.

About Me:

  • Husband of K0OPS
  • ARRL Life Member and ARRL Official Emergency Station
  • SARA Life Member
  • M0GLF is my UK callsign
  • Interests
    • Digital (APRS, Packet, D-STAR, HSMM, PSK31, NBEMS modes)
    • VoIP (aka VON: Voice over Network)
    • QRP
  • The NV0N callsign is in honor of my Elmer, NV0M (Rip VanWinkle) and his wife N0QCX (Ellie). It also reflects my interest in VoIP (or VON).
  • D-STAR sysop for W0DK
  • BARC Jr Elmer
  • ARRL VE and W5YI VE

Quotes:

  • FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate
    • "when you need Amateur Radio, you really need it."
    • "I think that there is a tendency because we have done so much to build infrastructure and resiliency in all our other systems, we have tended to dismiss that role 'When Everything Else Fails.' Amateur Radio oftentimes is our last line of defense."
  • Bill Meara, N2CQR
    • "You see, ham radio is usually not a passing fad. It is a serious, life-long addiction."
    • "Jean Shepherd wrote that at around age twelve, people come to a crossroads: “one path leads to success, the other to ham radio flea markets.""
    • "Even with all the advanced technology of the internet, even with modern Voice over IP and video technology and the tens of thousands of specialized discussion groups, I don’t think there is anything that quite matches ham radio’s CQ, and the fraternal response that it provokes."
    • "…he could not get rid of a chronic disease, the cacoethes gadgetendi, the itch to tinker.”—Author Richard Preston describing astronomer/gadgeteer James E. Gunn in “First Light – The Search for the Edge of the Universe."
