The Diefenbunker, officially known as Canadian Forces Station, Carp, is
a 100,000 square foot, underground, nuclear bunker located near Ottawa,
Ontario, Canada's capital. It operated 24/7 for over 32 years and was
officially shut down in 1994. Its primary purpose was to provide for
Continuance of Government in case of nuclear war and was intended to house 525 carefully selected people for 30 days. It has reopened as a
private museum and tours of this unique facility are conducted daily throughout the year.
VE3CWM (Cold War Museum) is located in the Emergency Radio Room, 25
feet underground. The original call sign was VE3GOC (Government Of
Canada). Much of the original radio equipment has been recovered and is
still operational to this day.
Arrangements can be made for visiting licensed amateur radio operators
to operate the station and talk to the world from 25 feet underground.
