"Stew" Gillmor was first licensed in 1953 as WN0ODE, then W0ODE. In
1960-62, he operated as member of the 6th Soviet Antarctic Expedition as op at
UA1KAE at Mirnyy, Antarctica. Then W1FEL, and finally W1FK in 1977. He worked
for Stanford Research Institute as a E.E. student at Stanford; then worked at
National Bureau of Standards in Boulder, Colorado and Antarctica. Then grad
school at Colorado and at Princeton. Professor of History and Science at
Wesleyan University in Connecticut since 1967 until retirement in June 2007.
Visiting Professor or Researcher at Cavendish Physical Lab, Cambridge England;
NASA, Washington, DC; Center for Terrestrial and Planetary Physics, Paris,
France; and Visiting Prof at Colorado School of Mines, at Stanford University,
and Visiting Fellow at Smithsonian Institution, in Wash. DC. Published a number
of articles on radio and history of radio in "73" and "CQ"
and elsewhere, plus about 50 professional articles. Published two books and
edited four more: including biography of C. A. Coulomb (1736-1806) for whom the
unit "Coulomb" is named; and most recently biography of famous radio
engineer F. E. Terman ("Fred Terman at Stanford"-Stanford University
Press-2004). Another hobby is jazz. Formerly led 11-piece jazz orchestra; also
has currently a CD on the London record company "Leorecords", a duo
CD with the famous avant garde jazz master Anthony Braxton. Getting back into
ham radio as of 2005 after nine years of moving around on research. Although
formerly worked on or near 150 ft dish at Stanford and rows of 40-foot long
LPAs, and with dishes elsewhere, has in recent years tended to use Vee-beams
from his bucolic Connecticut acres. A current antenna project is switchable six
Vee beam array from top of 88-foot pole, 330 feet each leg to 600-ohm
terminations at 20-foot poles at ends. Current favorite rig is Ten-Tec Orion II
and Ten-Tec Centurion Amp.
