----- I QSL on LOTW --- Hello I started ham radio at 14 in 1955 as WN1FMR. with a TR-75TV-2 Eldico 3 tube kit transmitter and an S-38C Hallicrafters receiver. Those were the good old days!! I worked for 40 years at Lucent Technologies and always enjoyed CW and QRP and am past president of QRP-ARCI and co-founder of the NE-QRP club and enjoy portable operating, Hamfests, old tube gear, and of course summer. The photo was taken on the beach in Seabrook NH and the radio, a 5 watt CW Elecraft 4 band K1(kit) is powered with a 12v. battery. The antenna is a Hamstick mounted on a copper pipe and an Emtech Z-match tuner. Making DX contacts near salt water with 5 watts is easy. Finding and fixing old radios is fun and a favorite, my Heathkit AT-1 transmitter ''tube" rig is used with a 50's Drake or 30's regen receiver I found a one tube (1964 vintage) 6DQ6 80m crystal control transmitter at a hamfest for $2, made a few modifications, brought it to a QRP "show and tell" and had fun making some memorable contacts with it on Straight Key Night. With a 160m module in my K1 the other morning I worked NH7O in HI on an endfed wire from my condo. Wow ! What a thrill probably never to be repeated, ever, in my lifetime. Contesting with the N1MM Logger program, a Winkey USB keyer, and 5 watts presents an interesting challenge especially from the condo on an endfed wire but I am blessed to be able to get a wire outside and am experimenting with my "wire" in the trees. The neighbors must think I am really crazy marching around on snowshoes in the middle of winter with a long pole seemingly fishing among the trees. Hope to see you on the air. 73/72 Jim Last modified: 2012-01-21 20:26:13, 2101 bytes fetched
