Have your wife make a lace dust cover and put training wheels on the back of your little "light in the loafers" solid state "Girley" amplifier.

I want something that glows in the dark. Click on the above Eimac tubes. Beautiful!

^The above^ software is used to screen stations checking in on top band with 100 watts into a G5RV or using a MFJ tuner and a 80 meter coax fed inverted V on a city lot.

-------------------------------------------------------W5GZU my dad's first rig in 1937

__

_His rig in 1938 was a pair of metal 6L6's turned upside down in a can of oil on 160 and 80 meters CW and a National NC-100XA receiver.

In the 30's when you upgraded or renewed your license you had to send in your old license to be canceled before they issued the new one.

Wow - Take a look at this fine receiver http://www.prismnet.com/~nielw/nat_list/nc100xa.htm

Three generations of 20-wpm Extra Class. My dad and I passed our Extra Class together at the Dallas FCC office in 1967. My Son Johnny passed his extra class in 1991 (KI5SZ) and received his Grandfather's call W5GZU under the vanity call sign program. The first photo was made the year my dad died when Johnny was 5-years old. The second photo is me with grandson Gary and son Johnny. Little Gary is already a computer guru.

_

When I received my license in May, 1952 (age 11) my dad's rig was a Collins 310B1 driving a pair of 812's (250 Watts) on 80 through 20 meters and a National NC-183 receiver. He was CW only until I received my license, then he added an 811 modulator so I could work phone. His antenna was a 135 foot center fed dipole between two 50 foot power poles fed with homemade open wire transmission line with 6-inch spacing.

My dad W5GZU was a commercial telegraph operator with Western Union and the Railroad in the 1920's. Most months he was at the top of the Brass Pounders League Honor Roll for passing the most Amateur radio traffic. QST BPL Nov 1948.

From 1959 to 1961 I operated F7HC from a US Army transmitter site in Orleans, France----------------------------------------------70 foot Rhombic towers

Ran the Collins S-Line into a large three curtain rhombic antenna beamed on Washington DC. With the 14dB gain from the Rhombic antenna the Effective Radiated Power was over 25,000 watts. That is when I discovered how important a good antenna is. I talked to my dad everyday on 20-meter CW and SSB. I also had a BC-610 crystal controled on 14.180 mHz AM phone. Receivers were Collins R-388, 51J4 and 75S1. Our Rhombic antenna tuner used BC-610 plug in coils.

We had 10 Rhombics (3 beamed on Washington DC) and a total of 40 Rhombic 70 foot towers on 100 acres of land.

The Collins 30S1 4CX1000 1kW amplifier was also used to drive our 50kW Collins transmitter for an additional 17dB of gain.

1960 Age-20 F7HC Orleans, France - The best equipment money could buy belonged to my Uncle Sam

--------------

We wore the same shoulder patch that General Eisenhower wore in WWII. We were told General Eisenhower designed this patch, a flaming sword symbolizes the use of armed forces to restore freedom. The rainbow colors represent the allied forces which, together, bring peace (symbolized by blue sky) to Europe. French Flag and US Army Signal Corps insignia.

_

Here is a 1960 photo of our US Army NATO transmitter site in Orleans, France. My Army MOS was Fixed Transmitter Operations and Maintenance which included waxing and buffing the floor. We had a total of four (3-operational plus 1-spare) Collins AN/FRT-22 40kW output DSB transmitters into rhombic antennas. One sideband was 16 channels of multiplexed RTTY and the other sideband was voice. Photo of our microwave tower and one end of our Washington DC ham radio Rhombic.

_

The operational 40kW circuits were to Washington DC, Tripoli, Libya and Asmeria, Turkey. The spare transmitter was used as a replacement when we took an operational transmitter off line for routine maintenace and testing by John and Howie on 20 meters SSB. Notice the size of the open wire transmission line on the top of the left transmitter. The top dish was our microwave link to NATO headquarters in Paris. The bottom dish was our link to the receiver site about 30 miles away. The receiver site had two rhombics for each circuit for space diversity reception. The Rhombics had so much directivity there were times we had two transmitters on the same 10.925mHz frequency. One beamed on Washington DC and the other on Tripoli, North Africa. Rhombic antenna: http://www.tpub.com/neets/book10/42o.htm

_

This is me standing in front of the Washington DC Pentagon 40kW Collins Transmitter. Under my hand is the controls that tunes the10kW driver on 10 pre-set frequencies. Behind me are the controls for the final. All the tuning was servo motor driven. We could change frequency in 30 seconds or less. Photo of Rhombic open wire transmission lines. Our ham radio transmission line was separate and away from this mess.

YES - we put the spare Big Dog Collins transmitter on 20 meter SSB. The transmitter was rated 40kW for continuous operation, but It would run 50+ kW intermittent SSB. With the 14dB gain from the Rhombic antenna the Effective Radiated Power was about 1.5 million watts with a take off angle of less than 10 degrees. We could not get anyone in the United States to believe we were in France. Normally a pair of 4-400's were used to drive a pair of 3CX2500s to 10kW. We used the Collins S-line and 30S1 1kW amplifier to drive the 10kW driver. The 10kW was used to drive six 3CX2500's in grounded grid for 50kW out. The S-Line receiver and 50kW transmitter were on separate Washington DC Rhombics. Only the guys at the VOA and Radio Free Europe had more power. The VOA had a 13dB power advantage on us with a 1-million watt AM transmitter in Germany. They also had better antennas, but they were beamed on Russia. When they would fire up about 20 Russian jammers would try to take them out. Remember Radio Moscow the Russian jammers and the cold war in the 60's?

The Russians spent a lot of money trying to jam the VOA, Photos of old Russian jammer station: Click on thumbnail photos to enlarge: http://urban3p.ru/object9901/gallery/

This is Howie Hodge the F7HC QSL manager. We worked together at the transmitter site and spent a lot of time on 20 meters. Howie and I are still good friends and keep in touch via email.

These Army photos are 50 years old. Wow Howie that was a long time ago. We were just skinney kids.

Collins 40kW transmitter http://www.transmitter.be/col-anfrt22.html The driver 6000 Volts @ 3 Amps. The final 7500 Volts @ 9 Amps.

F7HC checking the 50kW 14.180mHz transmitter with a florescent bulb.----This is the transmitter control desk where the frequency was selected for each transmitter.

In 1960 the American phone band started at 14.200. We transmitted on 14.180 and called frequencies above 14.200. I don't think our Army transmitter site would have meet FCC rules for human exposure!

The phones were to our Communication Center where the "Secret" guys worked. They would call us and tell us what frequency they wanted a transmitter on.

President Eisenhower's Columbine III and 1959 Boeing 707 Air Force One.----- Air Force One Video http://www.wimp.com/airforce

In 1958, the Air Force added three Boeing 707 jets (as VC-137s designated SAM 970, 971, and 972), into the fleet. Eisenhower became the first president to use the VC-137 during his "Flight to Peace" Goodwill tour, from 3 December through 22 December 1959. He visited 11 Asian nations, flying 22,000 miles (35,000 km) in 19 days, about twice as fast as he would have on Columbine.

_

We put this 10kW transmitter on 7.001 and 14.001mHz during one of the big CW DX contest. A ham who worked for the French PTT (FCC) operated it and had the highest score for Europe in the contest. We offered him Rhombics, but he perfered the low angle non-directional Vertical. Our Collins Vertical was 68' tall and had a frequency range of 3 to 30 mHz. I guess President Eisenhower and Air Force One were not flying that weekend.

This is my first photo of Sweetpea. We worked together at International Crystal in Oklahoma City where she made Crystals for the two way radio industry and I maintained the electronic equipment.

We were married on July 2, 1964. She is my Oklahoma Cowgirl.

_

This was my station in July 1964 when Donna and I got married. The power supply was from a BC-610 and the final was a pair of grid driven Eimac WWII surplus 304TLs. The exciter was a rack mounted Eldico SSB-100 and the Rx was a Drake 2B. The plates ran cherry red with an input of 2000 watts PEP (2500 Volts @ 800ma). This was the legal limit and lots of watts in the 60's.

April 1972 Sweetpea is 9-months pregnant with our son Johnny (Dob 4-29-72). She is on the floor barefooted and pregnant building a 21 inch Heathkit color TV.

The second picture is Donna and our daughter Diane age-3 with the completed TV. Donna also built the Heathkit Stereo that Diane is sitting on.

Notice the rotator box. Back in the 70's the Dallas Cowboys blacked out the games that were not sold out. I had high gain TV Yagi's with low noise pre-amps mounted at the antenna on top of my tower to bring in the games from Sherman and Tyler. Our house would be packed on game days.

In 1980 Donna started Sweetpea Electronics, later it was renamed Lucas labs. She was very successful and made enough money to put both our kids through college. She built electronic circuit boards and cables for several Dallas electronic companies. I tested the boards and repaired customer returns. She was able to work at home and be there for the kids who also helped with the business by installing parts on the boards. Diane and Johnny formed a union and charged Donna more for "smart parts" (diodes, transistors, LED's, polarized capacitors etc) that had to go on the boards a certain way.

_

In 1984 I had a dream of being a shipboard telegraph operator and traveling the world after I retired. Satellite technology eliminated the requirement of a telegraph operator on ships. A Second Class Radiotelegraph license required copy of 25 wpm plain text and 20 wpm code groups. It included knowing ( ) $ ; : & " symbols and being able to maintain and operate shipboard radio and radar equipment. I thought the theory part of the test was harder than the First Class Phone. You had to have six months as a telegraph operator at sea signed by the ship's captain to obtain the first class telegraph license.

My current antenna is a 140' per side 560' square loop (19,600-Sq-Ft) between four 70 foot power company high-line poles. It is fed with 275 feet of low loss open wire transmission line. The poles are 18-inches in diameter at the base, weigh 2000 pounds each and are 8-feet in the ground. Three inch angle steel stingers at the top of the poles bring the height back to 70-feet, the maximum allowed by the City of Lucas. The size of the antenna poles can be compared with the standard REA power pole in the right back of the photo. The City of Lucas gave me a construction permit for the power poles in exchange for letting them run a large water main 1000 feet down my property for a new housing addition. I have 5+ acres for antennas. My lot is 250' wide X 1000' long.
