The Satellite Amateur Radio Club, W6AB, was formed in 1961 to provide liaison for the launch of OSCAR 1, the world's first Amateur Radio satellite. It is believed to be the oldest recreation organization at Vandenberg AFB. To reach the SARC Clubhouse and Station W6AB from Lompoc, follow Highway 1, also known as the Lompoc-Casmalia Road, toward the Main Gate at Vandenberg AFB. Turn right onto Highway 1 and go north to San Antonio Road - West, where you turn left. Bear right at the fork, and head toward Casmalia. At the top of the hill, turn right onto Bishop Road. Follow Bishop Road past the "Golf Ball" structures to its end at the Clubhouse. From Santa Maria, take Betteravia Road west to Mahoney Road and then continue south on Black Road toward Casmalia. The road becomes Lompoc-Casmalia Road. Follow this road to the top of the hill, and turn left onto Bishop Road. Follow Bishop Road to its end, as noted above. Membership is open to any licensed Amateur Radio Operator; you do not have to be in the military, or work on the base. Regular meetings are at 1300 hours on the first Saturday of each month.
