DM1ØØMGY - Special call – 100 years since R.M.S. TITANIC was lost and the introduction of coordinated distress radio traffic

A hundred years ago, the passenger liner R.M.S.  “TITANIC” was lost on April 15th 1912. Following a collision with an iceberg, the vessel sank 300 nautical miles southeast of Newfoundland (LAT = 41'44'N, LON = 49'55'W). Unfortunately, only about 700 out of 2.200 passengers and crewmembers were rescued. It was one of the worst maritime disasters of civilian shipping.
The results are a number of measures to improve the rescue of people in distress from the high seas. As one of the most significant improvements, an continuous monitored international distress radio frequency had been established. Even today, these improvements are still valid and known as the “SOLAS Convention”.
Of course, the technical systems of are kept up to date and new technologies are continuously developed and introduced.

The DARC ham association from Schönau (S65) commemorates this historic event and the introduction of distress radio traffic using the special callsign DM1ØØMGY.
From January 1st up to December 31st 2012, we will be on air in many modes. Additionally, from April 1st up to June 30st 2012, we will award the special-DOK 1ØØMGY.

QSLs only via bureau, no direct cards and no E-QSL!
