The I.N.O.R.C. (Italian Naval Old Rhytmers Club) likes to celebrate the First Wireless Rescue on Open Seas:
North Atlantic, off shore of
Nantucket on 23/24 January 1909. The RMS Liner “Republic” was
rammed,in heavy fog, by the SS “Florida”. The “Republic” sunk on
24 January afternoon.
Thanks to the wireless and the heroism of the
“Republic” radio operator, Jack Binns and shore Station Operator at
Siasconset,Jack Irwin, over 1600 lives, but six, were saved.
The distress signal CQD was
used to ask help, because SOS although
proposed in 1906 was not ratified in America until 1912.
Both ships were giving help
to the people hited by the hearthquake
of Messina of 28 december
1908
