I was introduced to short wave at age 8 by my uncle who was a Merchant Marine radio op. He gave me a Hammarlund HQ-129 to listen to the international broadcast stations and monitor frequencies he used on the ship. I would copy his CW transmissions and he would check them for accuracy when he returned from sea. I lost interest during my teens but returned to radio in my twenties and was licensed as KA1CAN in 1978. I upgraded to Extra class in 1981. I work primarily 40 meter band and enjoy experimenting with different antenna designs. I have 3 acres at the top of a 700' ridge with clear views in most directions. Of all the wire antennas I have tried on 40M I found the Full Wave Loop out performs them all. I have had single loops, phased loops, 3 element fixed direction and now having fun with a 4 element double delta array. Currently in the line up is a ICOM IC-775DSP, IC-746, IC706mkIIG, IC-7000, Two Collins S-Lines 32S3, 75S3B and 30L-1, 32S3, 75S3, 30L-1, Collins KWM-2, 75S-3 w/Collins 30L-1 amplifier I also use a Drake B Line, and a Drake TR4C. Amplifiers include a Alpha 76A, AL-80A, AL-811H and a SB-200.
