I first got my Novice ticket in the late 60's but let it lapse and never got interested in the hobby until I retired and joined the local Sun City Center,FL (south of Tampa) Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Our small FRS radios didn't enable us to communicate with the local EOC or even our field teams, so the County Fire department sponsored CERT members in local Ham classes. We've got 5 new hams as a result-- a good thing given the many hurricanes we've gone through in the last few years.
As of May 2012, our 199+ member CERT team now boasts 53 hams

Feb 2005 - now:Eagle NTS Net for West Central Florida Section [NI4CE daily 8:30pm] - Manager.
Jan 2006- 2009: ARES/ RACES- DeputyCommunications Officer for Hillsborough County. Volunteered in Katrina and Wilma relief efforts.

Rigs: I run a series of Kenwood radios (TS-2000,TRIO TS-520D, TM-211a, TM-411a, TS-700sp, five TS-700a's) and 2 Yaesu FT 1802s into attic Cushcraft beams pointed due west; a north / south 20 meter dipole; 2-meter mag mounts, and 40/80 hamstick dipoles. Main portable/digital rigs are the Yaesu FT- 817, FT-897, and a Yaesu FT 1802 (in car). 3 HT's including 2 ICOM V8s.
Look for me on our local repeater KE4ZIP 147.225 (pl 146.2) or W4KPR 147.090 (pl 162.2) or on NI4CE (145.430- pl 100)
Married 42 years; two grown children; 9 grand-children!
