As of 12 May 2007 I successfully passed Element 4 and am now an Extra Class
Amateur Radio Operator
I first got my Technician License because one of the members of a rocket club
that I belonged to held a class. I took the class and passed the test. A year
later, I upgraded to Technician Plus. April 15, 2000, I upgraded to General
under the new FCC rules.
My interests include 6-meters, HF, SSTV and oddball packet formats. (ie: PSK31)
My mobile rig is a TenTec Model 526 "6n2" for 2-meter and 6-meter
all-mode work. I also have a Kenwood TS140s for mobile HF. I've installed both in the Dakota I inherited from my Dad when he passed away in December 2008. They are fed into a Diamond HV7A on the back of the truck. At home, I have a Kenwood TS2000 for all-band/all-mode work. I
also have a Heathkit SB101 given to me by a friend that I fire up on occasion
just to enjoy that tube glow!
I really like kit building and homebrew. I've built a keyer, my transverter, a
HamComm interface and a set of the Norcal K8FF paddles with a beautiful green
base. (Thanks to Marty, KE4MLH for the paint job on the keyer!)
If you're ever in the Atlanta area, I usually can be found on the GARS 2m
repeater at 147.075 (-600KHz 82.5Hz tone) or their 6m repeater at 53.110 (-1MHz 82.5Hz tone).
My callsign, W5NNH, was the original callsign of my Dad's Uncle Dave. I asked
his son, Grady, if I could use Uncle Dave's last callsign, K4IND and Grady told
me a bit of family history about Uncle Dave, including his original callsign.
Since I didn't have to wait for the paperwork certifying he was a Silent Key to
get his original, and I'm originally from Houston, myself, I went for W5NNH and
wear it proudly today.
