Bean Rock Lighthouse stands between Auckland and the large volcanic mass of Rangitoto Island the Inner Hauraki Gulf, where shipping enters Auckland's Waitemata Harbour from the Southwest Pacific Ocean. Built in 1871 using Kauri tree timber from New Zealand's now lost primeval forests, Bean Rock is the oldest wave-washed wooden lighthouse in the Pacific region. The original structure housed keepers in the top deck, with a small window through to their sleeping quarters so that they could monitor the light, even in bed!
