I am working as a communications technician in Gisborne. Interests include vintage "valve" radio equipment (primarily military radio equipment), and vintage telephone and telegraph technology.
I've been active in the past with microwave, repeater construction, APRS, DFing, and some contesting and Dxing. Currently not too active (on the air and other projects) due to lack of time, but would like to get back into CW and AM operating, and when the bands pick up again, would like to try "vintage FM" (with military 1940-1950's era sets) on 10 metres for a QSO to some of the gang stateside. This could also result an eyeball QSO with the Radio Inspector, though.
I've also been interested in longwave for quite some time, and NZ does have a ham band at 1800m (130-190 Kc), and recently, around 500Kc, so there could be some possiblities here, when I'm keen on digging up the yard for radials.
Current aerials include a horizontal, one wavelength loop for 160m, an R-5 vertical, and a basic (but never fails) 80m dipole with balanced feeders. There is also a vertical for 2m and 70cm.
I'm a member of ARRL, NZ SPAM group, NZVRS (NZ Vintage Radio Society), and the local Gisborne Amateur Radio Club. I also subscribe to Electric Radio magazine; an excellent publication on vintage equipment. Originally from the US (N6TNF) and relocated to NZ in 1999.
