HG35XA

35 years ago, in 1982, a then 12 year old schoolboy passed his first amateur radio exam and a few months later he was issued the HG5XA callsign. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Over the 35 years  I have made friends through this hobby in many-many close and distant countries of the planet and literally: even beyond. From all countries of Europe from Norway to the Vatican, from Japan to Australia, Argentina to India, and even on the International Space Station. No, that's not the short "You are 59" type of contacts that I am talking about (which I have with around 300 "countries") it is the countless number of people I have met in person, corresponded with or worked on projects together.Amateur radio has also resulted in interesting travels, many of my trips also having some amateur radio aspect to it. From Poland to the Vatican, from Madeira to Sweden, from Liechtenstein to Albania or Costa Rica, I have always enjoyed being a small part of this huge international community.

Most of what I know of the world I have learnt through amateur radio. It is this hobby that led me to learn English, it is hunting rare and distant stations that taught me about geography, often history and culture, it was through amateur radio that I learnt about computing, networks, satellites and a ton of other subjects.

In 2017 I will be using the HG35XA callsign to remind me (should I forget) how much I owe to amateur radio, my HAM family, mentors and fellow amateurs, many of whom have unfortunately passed away since.  And of course, the WPX contest is also coming up! :)
