My son, KJ4UBL, and I were first licensed on April 2nd, 2010, in Raleigh, North Carolina. We both upgraded to the General Class license on September 4th, 2010, at the Shelby Hamfest. We finally obtained our Extra Class license on September 1, 2012, again at the Shelby Hamfest in Shebly North Carolina. If you work(ed) me, with the exception of VHF+, I was probably on a Yaesu FT-817ND, Icom 703, or a Yaesu FT-450AT. I use an MFJ-949E or smaller LDG auto tuners mainly to tune homebrew wire antennae. There is always a home brew antenna project in the air such as 10 meter extended double zepp or 96' doublet or HF loops. Modes tend to be voice, PSK31, RTTY, slow scan, and other digital modes. Still trying to drill in the original mode, CW, into my head but that is a slow process - so far.

Our portable antenna farm consists of an Eagle 1 vertical, a 53' wire with a 9:1 unun, Par End Fed 10/20/40 or Par End Fed 20/40. Of course there is always an antenna article to read, build, and experiment with. A kite suspended 123' longwire antenna with a 9:1 unun at the beach is a great antenna!
